28 July 1870 — Madrid
Thursday. 28th [July 1870]. Henry gave me a good long letter to copy for him & that with helping to dress Hill’s arm took up all the morng. I sent Blanche her gloves by the Spanish Messrs going to London. The Times today says that the treaty we heard of yesterday is said to exist in Benedetti’s handwriting– News that the Emp. Prince Impl: & Prince Napoleon have started for the war. At ½ past 6 we went out for a ride & as we were starting they came across to say Mercier would go with us so we all three went by the Mon Cloa & came home earlier than usual as we had Mr & Miss Whyte & Mr & Mrs Hamilton dining with us. However we found the Whytes had just arrived as we came in so we had to dress quickly. After dinner Cerruti came bringing with Mrs Whyte & her youngest daughter who is most absurdly dressed with her long hair all down her back & a little round hat stuck on the top of her head wh as she is fifteen & very tall is rather too youthful. I did not know Mrs W. was back from a visit to her son at Linares. Cerruti took them home, so as our carriage wh we had ordered for them was not wanted Henry & I took a turn in the Fuente before going to bed.
