6 August 1870 — Madrid | |
Saturday. 6th [August 1870]. On getting up Henry found a note from De Blas with a copy of a telegram sent by Olozaga from Paris saying there had been a battle at Wissenburg & the french beaten & sustained great loss– It appears they had sent this at 2 in the night but luckily they had not waked us or there would have been an end of all sleep. At breakfast Cerruti rushed in to talk about it & we got the Papers confirming the news by telegrams from London & Prussia. I wrote some letters but after I had taken my medicine which I suppose disagrees with me I found my headache & had to lie down & keep quite quiet. At 6 we went for a ride in the Casa de Campo & after dinner we went to the Buen Retiro Concert & there were an enormous quantity of people. The Prims were there & we sat with them; while there Mercier rushed up & said there are more news but “cette fois c’est Victoire”– He seemed much elated but his ardour was soon cooled by both De Blas & Prim saying it cd not be true as they had had no news of it & speaking in rather a discouraging tone– It appears that when the last news came another battle had begun & the result was not yet known– | |
