8 August 1870 — Madrid
Monday. 8th [August 1870]. No further news merely verifications of yesterdays. Henry went over to see Mercier & found him very low & he said Mme Montijo was in a sad state. At 2 Henry went to the F.O. I wrote a good many letters to Eng: At 4½ Cerruti came & said he heard there was a Prussian acct of the defeat of MacMahon arrived, that the french had lost mitrailleuse, eagles &c. We told him to come after dinner & we went out for a ride at 6. We rode by up: Mon Cloa road & home by the lower. The Dr came as usual this morng & said Hill was so much better she would be about in a week. He helped her to walk up from her room on 1st floor to another on the top story where she must be during the repairs. After dinner we sent to the Hunts to come in & Cerruti also came & we had in the eveng papers the Prussian acct saying they had taken 4000 prisoners, 6 mitrailleuses & 2 eagles, but had sustained great losses themselves. As owing to the disturbances of last night Henry had not slept a wink; he was tired but he went with Cerruti to the F.O. to see for news & directly he returned newsless we went to bed–
