9 August 1870 — Madrid
Tuesday. 9th [August 1870]. No fresh news this morning. I wrote a good many letters & at 6 we took a ride in the Casa. Cerruti did not come today. After dinner we went to Prim’s & found him just going out to a Council of Ministers at the Regent’s who returned this morng from La Granja. He told Henry that the news from Paris were serious; there had been a very stormy debate in the chambers & the Republican members had left their seats & shook their fists in the face of the President who lost all controul of them & put on his hat– That there were also disturbances in the town– At Marseilles there had also been serious disturbances & then the Republic had been within an ace of being proclaimed. Mme Prim told me that the Emp: had sent the Prince Impl back to Paris. There had also been a second battle fought by MacMahon who after being defeated at Worth were followed as they retired by the Prussians. The French troops are being concentrated at Metz & another battle seems to be hourly expected. We did not remain long at Prims but took one turn on the Fuente & then home to bed.
