10 August 1870 — Madrid
Wednesday. 10th [August 1870]. Got up after breakfast. Wrote letters &c. Henry went to the F.O. & heard there that the French Govt is out & that they have now a military Govt. Also that the Emperor has given up the command of the army. A very oppressive sultry day & when we went out riding at 6 there was not a breath of air. Had visits from Mr da Costa (Portuguese Minister) & Mr Levrys Brown who is one of the Chinese Mission now here. The Chinese Ambassador also called while Hy was at the F.O. & left their cards large pieces of crimson paper with Chinese hieroglyphics. Mercier & Mr Weisweiller dined with us & afterwards we went to the Prims where there had been an official dinner given to the Chinese. I was duly presented to them & they seemed good natured kind of people (3 of them) rather plainly dressed—very ugly with their pigtails & straw hats with coral buttons on them. Their other interpreter Mr de Champs made them understand what little I had to communicate. They left early & so did we as I was quite done up by the heat– Republican meeting as we passed thro’ Puerta del Sol.
