11 August 1870 — Madrid
Thursday. 11th [August 1870]. Got up late & wrote some letters & copied for Henry. It was a sultry day & the afternoon we had a storm wh came on early—but did not discharge itself till after 5 o’cl: It made my headache & I was obliged to lie down at 5 on the bed. At 8 we went to dine with old Weisweiller & met there his nephew Mr Goldschmidt & Don Jose                de Alvarez a poet. After dinner Mr Montesino & Cerruti came in. After we left there we went to take a turn in the Fuente & found a good many people on passing thro’ the Puerta—Republicans, who hope that if the Emperor is beaten & there is a Republic in France that there will be also one here, wh is probable.
