15 August 1870 — Madrid
Monday. 15th [August 1870]. Mr Goschen the new attaché arrived this morng. Mr Koloszyc called on Henry. In afternoon Mr Canitz called & also Mme Karnicky. Canitz was calm & confident. We rode in the Casa de Campo at 5.30. Dined at 7.30 & went to see the ballet at the Circo de Madrid. It was the same kind of thing as the end of a Christmas Pantomime in London. We saw Weisweiller & Bedmar there– There had been a telegram from the Emp. to the Emps today headed “victoria Francesa” but saying the French were retreating wh is strangely incongruous.
