16 August 1870 — Madrid | |
Tuesday. 16th [August 1870]. Spent most of day cutting satins & arranging my work. At ½ past 5 went for a ride but waited abt the streets for Mr Hunt who had gone to see if there were any news. There was none so we went on to the Casa de Campo. My horse Prim went very sluggishly & as we were cantering along the road suddenly stumbled & fell. I was not hurt & soon got up so did the horse & stood by my side. I had bruised my left arm & hip but soon mounted again & we walked quietly home– Mercier & Mr Goschen dined with us– Mercier received 2 telegrams wh were rather mysterious. The Emperor has not been heard from for 2 days & the Prussians seem to be advancing. Poor Mercier was very unhappy. We went after 10 to the Prims– Cerruti came to see us while we were sitting the gentlemen smoking—& found Prim had gone to the Regents’ for a Cabinet Council. She was in & De Blas came. He said there had been another telegram from King William to the Queen to say he had again beaten the French & were advancing to Chalons. It seems too dreadful a smashing & demolishing of the French. | |
