17 August 1870 — Madrid
Wednesday. 17th [August 1870]. Was rather tired after my shaking of yesterday. Sagasta called on us & told Henry that if England would wish it Spain was ready to join in the convention to maintain neutrality. The war news are still very bad. Sagasta says there will probably be republican disturbances here but the Govt is ready to meet them. We had a thunderstorm & some violent wind wh was hailed with joy being the 1st good rain of this summer. We took an hour’s drive but were driven in by the rain.
