19 August 1870 — Madrid | |
Friday. 19th [August 1870]. Still at work dress making—to finish a white muslin gown. We walked in the Retiro– Had a visit from Silvela who has just returned from Vichy. He says the depression in France is very great & he saw no enthusiasm for the war but that the people were enlisting in a melancholy manner as a sheer duty– Sagasta & Adl Beranger (Minister of the Marine) dined with us. B. is a curious dark stern looking man– Speaks pretty good English, but is not a great talker. Cerruti came in after dinner. We had intended going to Prim’s but we gave it up as it was late. | |
