20 August 1870 — Madrid | |
Saturday. 20th [August 1870]. Mme Karnicky called. We took our walk in the Retiro. Cerruti dined with us & we went afterwards to Prims. He thinks very seriously of affairs in France– There has been a great battle before Metz & the whole French army under Baraine is shut up there. This last battle has been most fearful, the losses on both sides being tremendous. | |
