26 August 1870 — Madrid
Friday. 26th [August 1870]. Wrote letters & read. Henry went to F.O & there heard that the French had evacuated Chalons & that the Prussians were marching on to Paris. We took our usual walk in the Retiro. Dined at 7:30 & then drove out to Caravanchel to see Mme Montijo, found her rather more cheerful & very grateful for the visit. M. Nava de Tajo thinks very badly of affairs. She told me the Regent had been to see her wh pleased her exceedingly, as he had never done so before, but he told Henry that knowing what trouble she must be in he could not help going to condole with her, wh shows his good heart. It being rather cold we had the carriage shut on our return.
