28 August 1870 — Madrid | |
Sunday. 28th [August 1870]. At breakfast I was seized with a stiff neck which towards the afternoon got very painful & I was obliged to lie down & Henry went out without me. It was the more tiresome as we had Cerruti, Mercier & Messrs Sey: & Goschen to dinner. Mercier was in very good spirits. We had no war talk & the conversation chiefly turned on Ld Hertford whose death is in today’s paper & speculations as to whether he would (as he told Henry) have left them to the National Gallery. The Acapulco children came to tea this afternoon. | |
