| 1 September 1870 — Madrid | |
| Thursday. 1st September [1870]. Mrs Hunt came & brought some work to do in the machine so we went up to the top of the house to do it. At 5 Hy sent for me to say Mr Madrazo (the painter) & his daughter Isabel were here. When they had paid their visit I was going to get ready to ride when the Acapulco children came & I had forgotten that I had asked them for today. Henry went out riding on Prim & Mercier went with him & I stayed with the children– At 7 Topete arrived to dine—as they had told him 7 instead of ½ past. Le Marquis del Cerro & M. Silvela also dined with us & Del Cerro brought us very bad news of the war– That MacMahon had been fighting a battle & was beaten & all this made Topete furious as being a Montpensierist he is very French & pretended that Del Cerro was very pleased to tell of their defeat. Afterwards Cerruti came in & they all sat talking it over till 11. | |
