3 September 1870 — Madrid
Saturday. 3rd [September 1870]. Got up late—better but not well– Did some satin work in morng. After lunch Mrs Hunt came to do some more machine work but at 5 I had some tea & then we went out driving in the Casa de Campo. I left Henry to walk in the poplar avenue & went on to the top of the hill. When I came back I found him with Mme Karnicky who was also walking there & Mercier who was riding. When Henry got into the carriage again he told me that Mercier was very desponding & thought the game was all up in France. I did not feel very well & when we got home had to lie down. Cerruti dined with Henry & brought me some lovely flowers & after dinner I sat in the drawing room with them– To bed abt 10– C. & Henry went to Prim’s but Henry brought back no news.
