5 September 1870 — Madrid
Monday. 5th [September 1870]. This morning the news is that the Republic is proclaimed & the Empress has left Paris for Belgium & it is reported that Metz has surrendered. Mrs Hunt came & we spent the afternoon over the sewing machine. Canitz called but had no fresh news. He is always calm & moderate. At 5 we went for a walk in the Retiro & fed the swans. Cerruti & poor Mercier dined with us. We talked very little war & when we were not on that subject he was pretty cheerful. After dinner we went to the Dss de la T. but found she had retired early so we went on to the Prims– No further news except that Paris is more quiet.
