Monday. 12th [September 1870]. Mr de Martino is gone today to England to fetch his wife & Ive sent a small bag by him & so I wrote letters & copied for Henry and in afternoon we took a little drive in the brougham. Mercier & the Hunts dined with us. Mercier has received his dismissal from the Govr of Defense. We are so sorry that he is going & he is dreadfully low, as he has no private fortune & is left very poor. | |
