14 September 1870 — Madrid
Wednesday. 14th [September 1870]. Mme Riaño sent her baby to see me in the morng. We took a walk in the Retiro. Mercier & Mr Goschen dined with us & we afterwards went to the Buen Retiro Concert—the last of the year. Not many people there– Saw Mme Karnicky with her cousin Prince Lubomirsky who has just come from Paris & said he had been taken up as a spy & his clothes nearly torn off his back. Saw Topete who condoled over the loss of the “Captain” off Cape Finisterre. It is certainly a most fearful disaster & amongst others our cousin Lewis Gordon is lost. It is not quite a year ago since poor Bertrand died. Every one here is full of sympathy abt it.
