15 September 1870 — Madrid
Thursday. 15th [September 1870]. Wrote letters to Leo, Mrs Burr &c. The news from Paris are not good. It appears that there are threatenings of internal dissensions & there was expected last night an attack upon the Hotel de Ville by the Reds. If such be the case how can Paris defend itself from the stranger enemy! It is still very hot & oppressive. We rode at ½ past 5 in the Mon Cloa. The Riaños & Mercier dined with us. Mercier leaves the day after tomorrow to join his family at Biarritz.
