3 October 1870 — Madrid
Monday. 3rd [October 1870]. Henry & I went for a ride. Cerruti dined with us. At dinner the French Dr came & said Mrs Beale’s baby was dying & must be fed every ¼ hour. I went up & stayed with it till ten when we went to the Regency there was a reception & serenade there as it is the eve of the Regent’s fete day. There was a great crowd & an immense quantity of officers. The Dss wore a pale mauve dress & had red velvet in her hair. I did not admire the combination very much—but the dress was one of Watts last (£50) from Paris. We did not stay long & when I came home I went again to see Mrs B’s baby & found it no better.
