9 October 1870 — Madrid | |
Sunday. 9th [October 1870]. Just as we were going to church came a message to say Mr Whyte was ill & there was no service. At 12½ Henry rode my horse “Prim” & went to the Regency to join the Regent & see the Review. Cerruti came to fetch me & we went together to the Regency to see the marching past. Mlle Paz & some other people also went there. After waiting some time the Regent & the Etat majeur came & took up their place opposite the church near the Regency & the marching past began– We could quite distinguish the Regent & Prim whose horse was a little behind the Regent’s & next him was Henry who was conspicuous for being in plain clothes. Prim was mounted on a lovely cream coloured horse a present from the Regent. The marching past took 2½ hours abt 25,000 men besides volunteers. The most gay uniform was that of the Guardia Civil with their cocked hats coats turned back with red—white leather tights & high boots. We also admired the cavalry very much. Cerruti took me home when it was over. Messrs Go & Sey dined with us. After dinner Cerruti came in & then we went to the Prims—but did not see him as he was busy with some of the Ministers. | |
