29 October 1870 — Madrid
Saturday. 29th [October 1870]. I went after breakfast off to my last sitting to Palmaroli– Mme Pal: came to the studio to pay me a visit. Henry took me there & fetched me home & Pal promises to send us the picture on Monday morning. Cerruti dined with us & we afterwards went to the Opera. We talked to Cerruti abt his retiring wh he said was true, & moreover he was likely to be married to an American lady who had gone to Florence on purpose & said he must go there & marry her– I am glad of this as he is now very old & so near sighted as to be nearly blind—but has the softest & kindest heart in the world & is always thinking of doing good. We went to the Regent’s box & heard “Matille de Chabran”. I had never heard it before & was pleased altho I do not admire Mme – The Rt & Dss came. He seemed in better spirits in the hopes that a King was nearly fixed upon–
