31 October 1870 — Madrid
Monday. 31st [October 1870]. I went to breakfast at the Regency & on the stairs there met Prim who was coming away. He seemed surprised to see me up so early & I told him it was an English fashion– I sewed with the Dss till 3 & as the baby Leopoldo was ill we did not take our intended drive together in the Casa de Campo & I came straight home & spent the rest of the time sewing the child’s frock I am making to send to Kate. My picture came today. Just as I was going off to the Regency I met Pal & the men bringing it in & while I was away they hung it in the dining room with a bit of the framed Italian tapestry on each side. We dined at 7 & went to the Opera as the Dss had given us their box & we invited Messrs Ash & Goschen & Mr Underdown who joined us there. The Opera was “Nabuco” but not well sung the 1st part was done by La Spezia an ancient lady who sang furiously & out of tune.
