6 November 1870 — Madrid
Sunday. 6th [November 1870]. A messenger arrived unexpectedly. He had been to Tours & said he got thro’ without any difficulty but the Spanish messenger had been arrested on suspicion of being a spy. A French Genl in the carriage had recognised him as having met him at Lyons on his way from Rome– The messenger foolishly denied this but the Genl was right & had him arrested. He then confessed it but said he was carrying his Govt’s dispatches wh was true. “Ho ho, said the F Genl if you tell one lie you may have told another” & clapped him into prison. However he was not detained long. I went to church with Car. Henry could not go. In the afternoon we took a drive. Messrs Sey Go & Ash also Mr St John & Genl Milans del Bosch dined & we had the bustard the Genl had sent us. The Hunts came in the evening.
