23 November 1870 — Madrid
Wednesday. 23rd [November 1870]. The Arthur & Car got up early intending to go to Toledo it was a dull morng & they did not go after all. Mr Ffrench arrived to breakfast from England. Wrote despatches & letters for Henry wh took up all my morning & I could not go out with the others. After lunch we went to drive in the Casa de Campo. The Arthurs, Car & I. At 5 Inzenga came & we sang & played till dinner. Juan & B. Riaño dined with us. Emilia was not able to come. Cerruti also came, his last dinner as he leaves to morrow. He brought me some flowers—but went away early to take leave of his friends. We shall miss him dreadfully & shall never have another Italian Minister so nice—but he is very old & tired of work & his eyesight is almost gone it is nearsighted. He talks of marrying an American lady who has followed him to Florence since the death of her father. Arthur played the bones. Mr Goschen came in & it was settled he shd go to Toledo with them tomorrow morning–
