25 November 1870 — Madrid
Friday. 25th [November 1870]. I went to breakfast at the Regency & stayed & sewed with the Dss. She had a lesson in watercolours of Mr Grau. I came home at 3 & did not go out again. Mr Whitworth & Mr Poachin & Mr Bragge dined with us. Mr W. is the great gun man—an ordinary looking thin plain man who told us at dinner that when he was a lad he had nothing but £1 in the savings bank & that sent as a contribution to pay O’Donnell’s election expenses. Mr Poachin is a benevolent weak looking party with a high pitched voice, long grey locks frilled shirt & brass buttons. Mr Bragge is quite a character—& tho’ vulgar full of information & cleverness. He says he has a collection of 8000 smoking pipes besides a very good collection of iron work & also his wife has a good one of lace. Mr Penrose, the architect of St Pauls also dined. A tall silent awkward man who seemed inwardly much amused at the 3 other gentlemen. At 10 they departed just as our party returned from Toledo all looking dilapidated & saying they had been all the whole time since they left. We gave them food & got them to bed–
