Saturday. 24th [December 1870]. I had a long lesson of Grau as he stayed all the morng. Adeline & I began to read Schillers Maria Stuart together. In afternoon altho raining we went out. Henry showed A. the Plaza Mayor & then we took him to the Cortès. Thence we went to Mme de Martino’s where we met Messrs Blanc & Sonnino & Mme M. had a Christmas tree for her little boy (abt 2 years old) & gave us all presents. We had tea there & then came home. A pouring night. We had our Christmas dinner. The Riaños, Palmaroli, Col. Fitch, Hunts, Hamiltons, Messrs Ff: Ash, Sey & Spen, Mr Rutledge (from Cordova) & our 3 selves—16 in all. Just at the end Messrs Blanc & Sonnino came in– Mr B sent me & A. two gigantic bouquets with some exquisite roses– We had a little music in the eveng & some hot punch & then had a small “Snap Dragon” in the back Drawing room & they all departed abt 12– A & I sat up some time talking & pulling the roses out of our bouquets to put in water.
