29 December 1870 — Madrid
Thursday. 29th [December 1870]. Grau sent to say he could not give me a lesson so I went with Adeline to see how her portrait was getting on. Henry fetched us at 2 & directly after lunch we went out & I went to the Regency & saw the Dss about my dress & while there her parcels that I had ordered from London for her arrived– We then drove thro’ the Calle de Turcos & saw in the walls the bullet holes—4 or 5 small & one large—from the shots fired at Prim. Read in the eveng with Adeline. The De Martinos dined with us & we had a cheery evening. The rest of the Italian Legation had started at 7 this morng to go to meet the King at Cartagena. We also called on Mme Bauer in the afternoon & she told us her husband had gone too.
