30 December 1870 — Madrid
Friday. 30th [December 1870]. Had a lesson of Grau this morning & did some writing for Henry– After lunch A & I went out in the brougham & went to see Mr Ff. Found him & better of his bronchitis—we talked over the dance we are to have on Monday. Thence we went to the Prims. The Countess said Prim was going on well & had slept. The Regent was there & before I left the Dss de la Torre came; we had a discussion abt our dress for the Cortès & I then went home intending to send for Del Cerro—at the gate of the War Office I met Del Cerro & he said we cd not change it so we came home—& read till dinner time– I had hardly finished writing the last few words when Giovanni announced Mr Hamilton—& with a downcast face, he asked whether we had heard the news—we said “what news” He answered “the Genl is dead.” We were horrified having only this afternoon been told by the Css he was better. He said he had heard it from one of the Secretaries of the Cortès & had no doubt it was true. We went to bed as miserable & upset as possible & Henry at once telegraphed it to England. We had had a very pleasant eveng laughing over Acrostics & this was a wretched ending–
