31 December 1870 — Madrid
Saturday. 31st [December 1870]. Wrote all the morning for Henry. He went to see the Regent & came & told me the Dss had told him I must go & ask to see Mme Prim & she would meet me at 4. I went on writing for Henry & at 3 Mme de Martino came to see us & I asked her to come & dine with us. At 4 Adeline & I went out in the brougham to the Ministry of War but we were not admitted. They said the Css did not receive. It appears it is the fashion here for the lady to stay at home & sit for 9 days in a darkened room & receive all her lady friends who sit a certain time without speaking. This seemed to me a barbarous fashion & I was not sorry when told the Css was not able to receive. As it was dreadfully slippery & dangerous for the horses we came straight home– We had tea at 5 & Mme de Aylton & Louisa came to tea & also Palmaroli so Adeline & I did not get much reading. Mme de Martino came & dined & her husband came to fetch here at 10—& they went on to the De la Rochefoucauld. Henry went to the Regency but came back early–
