5 January 1871 — Madrid | |
Thursday. 5th [January 1871]. Wrote in the morning & lesson from Grau—after lunch I & Adeline took a drive to call on Mme Bedmar & leave some cards. It was very slippery & freezing in the shade & we did not care to stay out long. Just as we came home Silvela came & called & sat some time. He told us that the Dss de Prim was a little better & he had seen her– She still says in the most melancholy way “I have followed Prim every where, in his exile & his political conspiracies & now I must follow him to the tomb.” I sent Hill to see the English nurse this afternoon & she brought back a sad account of her—that the Dss de Prim had fallen into a listless state taking no heed of anything & had not had her hair combed since he died. Messrs Spen & Pal came to tea, also Ff. & we tried to keep him to dinner but he said he was not well eno’. Henry’s cold is still bad so we did not go to Mme de Martino’s but let Arthur & Adeline go alone—we went early to bed– I did some copying for Henry in the eveng. | |
