10 January 1871 — Madrid
Tuesday. 10th [January 1871]. We were rather late this morng. At 1½ the Royal carriages came to fetch Henry & he & Messrs Ash Sey, Go & Ff & Arthur all went to the Palace where Henry presented his credentials to the King. He is the first of the Ministers to perform this ceremony. The King read his speech in Spanish very fairly, so Henry said, & before lunch was over they all returned. Adeline & I were too lazy to go out but we had a great many visitors. First came the Countess Montijo & her niece Mme Nava de Tajo. They stayed some time & Mme Montijo had the white kittens brought to be shown her. Just as she was going away came the Dss de la Torre & Venturita– When they had gone M de Martino & Mr de Sonnino, Mr Blanc, Mr Ash, Mme de Martino, Mme Bauer, Vicomte del Cerro. They nearly all stayed for tea– After dinner we went to the Opera to hear “Poliuto” in wh Tamberlick & Tiberini sang. The De Martinos joined us. Between the 1st & 2nd acts the King arrived & went to his small box near the avant-scene– On entering a loud clapping of hands was begun from the galleries & he had twice to get up & bow to the house– The people in the butacas received him coldly but civilly taking off their hats. The Opera was over early & we were home before 11.
