9 January 1871 — Madrid
Monday. 9th [January 1871]. I woke with a headache which increased as the day went on & so I did not get up & began to despair of being present at dinner. However being better at 7 I got up. Arthur was also laid up to day & only got up to dinner. We had the 3 Aylton ladies, F. Silvela, Baron Benifayo, Mr Blanc, Ash, the Chargés d’Affaires of Brazil (Lopes Gama) Comte Dubsky & Mr D’Aunay. In the eveng Mr Ff & Mme Bedmar came early in order to introduce some people they had invited for me & we had cleared the front drawing room & stretched a linen & we had a “tapeur” for the piano & set everyone dancing. At ½ past 12 they began a cotillion wh lasted till ½ past 1 & then they departed & the house was cleared by 2. I should think we had about 100 people & the eveng was very successful.
