8 February 1871 — Madrid
Wednesday. 8th [February 1871]. Up latish. Had my lesson of Grau & then wrote letters. After lunch we had a visit from Genl Badeau Consul of U.S. in London & of the Conde de Valencia de Don Juan who stayed some time looking at our curiosities– He is a good looking clever agreeable man & speaks English so well as to have very little accent. As soon as he was gone we went out driving in the open carriage & left a parcel at Baron Haber’s wh he is going to take to London for me. I went to see Mme de Martino, found I could not see her as she is ill in bed feverish & with a rash. I then went to the Fuente where I met Henry & we took a walk; we met Mr Goschen & saw quantities of people we know & it was a lovely day. We came home to tea. The d’Ayltons came also Mme Quesada & her mother & Emilia & Mr Gayangos. We dined alone & I wrote all the eveng for Henry & myself.
