15 February 1871 — Madrid
Wednesday. 15th [February 1871]. Grau gave me a lesson. I wrote to Adeline & Mrs Burr. After lunch I went out driving with Henry & Clarita & we walked in the Fuente where we met Mr Hunt. We then drove up & down & saw the King driving & then came home to tea at 5. The Bells called. We dined alone & afterwards Sir Philip Woodehouse came in & Palmaroli. Sir Philip went with us to the Austrian Embassy where there was a great ball. He came this morning & is staying here a few days. Mme Karnicky’s ball was a tremendous crush & we came away pretty early as it was impossible to dance.
