21 February 1871 — Madrid
Tuesday. 21st [February 1871]. I wrote all the morning for Henry. After lunch Mr Ff: came in & we settled to have our dance on Saturday as that was the only day the R.C’s could dance after 12 o’cl: it was the feast of Los Piñatas, & they could eat meat. We sent for Clarita & then went out in the carriage. We dropt Mr Ff: at the Palace to write down our names & then Picked up Emilia & her boys & went to the Prado to see the masks. There were more masks to day than ever & a great many spoke to us, especially one on horseback disguised as a post boy, who made Henry a long speech full of compliments & eulogies. Unluckily just after 5 when it was most lively it came on to rain & we were driven home. We dined alone & afterwards went to Genl Sickle’s ball. Did not stay there long but went on to the Bedmars. It was so crowded & hot that we soon came away.
