28 February 1871 — Madrid
Tuesday. 28th [February 1871]. Breakfast in bed, throat rather better. Spent all morng in looking thro’ papers & cutting out notices. Did not go out. Henry rode. Messrs Ff: & Pal: called. Pal brought me a curious high tortoise shell comb with a bas relief on it—very well done with the words “Hypocrate refuse les presens d’Artaxerxes” on it. He found it at Valladolid. I worked at mending tapestry. We told Pal & Ff: to come & dine wh they did. I worked at frame all the eveng till bed time.
