27 February 1871 — Madrid
Monday. 27th [February 1871]. I woke with a sore throat & so did not get up till 11 & then had a drawing lesson of Grau. Whyte called—& after lunch Mr Wykoff an American who said he had been to Wilhelmshohe & seen the Emperor Napoleon– He talked a great deal abt him—said he found him well & hopeful of returning to France as Emperor. Henry was obliged to go out & left him with me & he stayed a long time & was very amusing & entertaining & told me he had known the Emp: as long ago as when he was at Ham & that he (Wykoff) then felt sure he would be Emp: some day. Wykoff is a tall thin man of rather theatrical air & manner—very talkative & made up with a scalp so managed as hardly to be detected & to look youthful. When he left Mr Spencer came to take leave as he returns to Biarritz today. I sent Giovanni with him to help him to pack. Henry took a ride but I did not go out. Wrote to Bee. We dined at the Bauers. Met Mme Haber, Mme Acapulco, Chevalier Nicholas, Dragonetti, Columbiano, Mr Brin, Mr Goldschmidt & Mr Ff: I sat between Bauer & Nicholas. After dinner I was astounded & Mmes Bauer, Acapulco & Haber smoking cigarettes. Pal: came & several others. Pal brought some very pretty photos of the new Q. of Spain. He said some of the Alfonsists—being unable to deny the beauty of the Q’s face said it could not be her she must have got some other woman to sit for it! My throat being bad we came away directly after tea.
