6 March 1871 — Madrid
Monday. 6th [March 1871]. I went at 11 to breakfast at the Presidencia & stayed till 2. When the carriage fetched me I went to see Mme de Martino & took her some flowers & then came home & rested till dinner. We had a dinner party consisting of Los Marqueses de Bedmar—de Martorelli & de Alcañices, the German Minister & Mme de Canitz, Mme de Aylton & Bernadina, Mr Llorente & the Counts de Valencia de Don Juan & Mr Zarco del Valle. Very few people came after dinner. We had a great discussion with Dubsky abt the green of our walls, whether it was poisonous or not, & then as to the origin of the English language & laughed a great deal–
