19 March 1871 — Madrid
Sunday. 19th [March 1871]. I went to church but not Henry as at 12. he had to go off in uniform to the Station with his secs: to meet the K & Q. I had lunch directly after Mr Whyte came up to talk to me so I offered to take him as far as the Alcala in the carriage. We were not allowed to go up in the carriage by the Alcala but we went to the back door in the Greda—there Whyte left me—I found several people with the Dss & amongst them Elisabeth de Martino. We had to wait some time. Some of the Dip Corps came from the station where they said the crowd had been awful & they had been so hustled they had not seen the Queen– The K & Q went to the Atocha church first to hear a “salve” & then passed thro’ the Alcala, the line of march being kept by the troops. The Q. wore a blue bonnet & dress & sat at the K’s right but I could not see clearly if she was pretty. When they had past, every one left the Dss last. I waited till 3 when Henry called for me & we went to the Concert. It was not quite so full. We took the 2 Ayltons with us. I had a bad headache. The Marquise de Pomar was at the Concert in a high comb with a white mantilla & there were several Alfonsists in the same who afterwards drove in the Fuente. The sec: dined also the Hunts & Pal: We did not go to the Canitz as I was tired & had a headache.
