20 March 1871 — Madrid
Monday. 20th [March 1871]. Wrote in the morning & had a lesson from Grau. At lunch I had a note from the Dss de la Torre to say she could not dine with us tonight as her baby had been ill in the night & as she had been up nearly all night she was not well eno’ to come– I went to the dentist at 4 & then went to see the Dss & she took me to see the child who had a feverish attack & then I came home & rested till dinner time. Mme de Martino came to see me for the 1st time since her illness & while she was sitting by my bed talking Giovanni knocked at the door & said an A.D.C had come from Genl Serrano to say he could not dine with us as the King had sent for him to dine at the Palace. While dressing for dinner a note came from Sagasta to say he was too busy with the elections for the Senate to dine. The King’s Sec: Marquis Dragonetti did not get our invite in time to ask the K permission to come so we were 4 less at dinner tho’ Serrano sent his A.D.C. Marquis of Amala. We had the Weisweillers, Comyns, Bernars, Del Cerro & Topete & had a very cheery dinner. A few people came after dinner & Ernesti played & Mr Hunt sang.
