21 March 1871 — Madrid
Tuesday. 21st [March 1871]. I wrote in the morning. After lunch I went out driving & fetched Emilia. I also went to see the Dss de la T. found the child better & the Dss looking very pretty in a gray satin gown trimmed with swansdown. She had just returned from paying her first visit to the Queen & was very much pleased with her. She said the Queen was also in a grey (gris perle) satin with a diamond brooch. We talked abt the members of the Veloz Club who had insulted the Q. on Sunday—by standing out on the balcony keeping their hats on & not bowing as she passed. A great many people have withdrawn from the Club. Just before I started to drive Serrano with an AD.C came to call on Hy to say how sorry he was he could not dine with us last night. & he came home while I was sitting with the Dss– I did not stay long but went off & Emilia & I took a drive in the Fuente. For the 1st time the carriages were made to keep the line & we saw several carriages trying to resist amongst whom Mme Karnicky’s. I brought Emilia home & we had tea. Henry had a cold & did not go out. Mr Gay: came to fetch Emilia & take her home.
