22 March 1871 — Madrid | |
Wednesday. 22nd [March 1871]. Had a drawing lesson which took up all my morning. The papers are very angry at the Grandeza for driving in high combs & mantillas as a demonstration against a foreign Queen—Mme Alcañices is especially pointed as being as Russian & therefore ultra Spanish. At 3 I went out & took the Ayltons with me. We went to call on Mme de Martino & found her in & rather laid up having over exerted herself– We stayed a good time & went away intending to drive in the Fuente. We had not got more than a few yards when crack! The axletree of the carriage snapt & we had to jump out & rush back to Mme de Mar: By that time there were calling Prince & Pss Istriani who came here with the Queen & who leave next week for Italy. They staid a long time but I was obliged to outstay them to get Elisabeth to pin up my long dress that we might walk home– As soon as they were gone she did up my dress & we walked home– I then dressed & we went to dine with the Ettlings. Met there the Weisweillers, Valderez, Dk of Medina Sidonia, Vilches, Carlets, &c. Ettling took me in & I sat next to O. Vilches who was rather agreeable. In the evening had rather fun talking with Vilches who is a Unionist & Mme Valderez who is a Carlist. They both condemned these comb & fleur de lis demonstrations & the abusiveness of the papers & their attacks on ladies. | |
