2 April 1871 — Madrid | |
Sunday. 2nd April [1871]. I had a cold & did not get up to church but read & wrote & got up for luncheon– We fetched Bernadine & went to the Concert at 3. It was an extra one given in Aid of the Sick & Wounded. After church we drove in the Fuente where there was a great crowd & the King & Q were driving & they had the eldest child with them sitting on the Q’s lap & an A.D.C. accompanied them. We were told that the Q. stopped the carriage & held the child up to the crowd that they might see him & let some children kiss him. The Q. looked very pretty & for the first time wore a mantilla. When we had taken 3 turns we went to leave cards on the Valencia de Don Juans who have just lost their little boy—the K & Q passed us on their way home and the little boy was asleep in the Q’s arms wrapt in a shawl & we saw that all the common people in the streets took off their hats to them. Mr Goddard & his son who are travelling in Spain came to dinner with us tonight also Palmaroli & Messrs Ff: Ash. Go & Sey. The De Martinos came in the evening. | |
