4 April 1871 — Madrid | |
Tuesday. 4th [April 1871]. At 11 Henry took me to have the last touches put to my portrait & we stayed there till nearly 2. Mr Ff: came to lunch & Henry went directly afterwards to the Cortès. Mr Ff: stayed talking to me abt the affair of the Veloz Club. Henry wishes him to retire as no apology has been given for the insult to the Q. on the day of her outings. & Ff: does not care to annoy his Madrid friends by leaving. At 3½ Mme Canitz came to call & I made her send away her shut carriage & go out with me– Mme d’Aylton came to call & left when we went out at 4. We left some cards & picked up the 2 Aylton girls & went to the Retiro where we got out & took a walk. It was a lovely warm day & spring is beginning to burst out & the young leaves are lovely. We dropt Mme Canitz & came home late. Mr Ff dined with us and directly after dinner we went to see the Serranos & tell them we were going to Toledo tomorrow. Found them in good spirits. It appears the Q. had been to day to visit the Foundling Hospital & had been met by the Committee of Ladies, Montijo, Bailen & Medinaceli, which the 1st advance of the grandees. We did not stay long with the Serranos but went on to the De Martinos who had a small party of dips: we did not stay late. | |
