18 April 1871 — Madrid | |
Tuesday. 18th [April 1871]. Wrote a lot of letters & got one from Emily Russell. Henry went to the King at 2 & was not away more than ½ hour. At 5 the Duchess de la Torre came & fetched me with Conchita & Pepita & we went for a drive as it was too windy to go to the country as we had intended; we drove in the Fuente. It was most sultry & uncomfortable. We went to see their little villa which is next to the Bullring. It is a little box of a house with a tiny garden dreadfully over looked but nicely arranged inside. The Dss told me how they had bought this house to replace one they had sold before the Revolution. When her husband was conspiring against Isabella he was in the Canaries & she at St Jean de Luz. She being on the eve of her confinement he did not let her know what he was doing but in case his attempt failed he took the precaution of selling house furniture & all– He then fought the Battle of Alcolea & made the Revolution. She told me she had had endless troubles abt the things that had been sold—as Ladies who had given her presents, had seen them in the market—& were offended—& the Dss could not explain how & why they had been sold & that it had been done without her knowledge. | |
