20 April 1871 — Madrid
Thursday. 20th [April 1871]. In the afternoon I was going out with the M to drive when we were hindered by some calls. Mr Maurice the man from Marix frères came with some patterns and I chose two gowns one black & the other pink. When he was gone came Mr Adee the U.S. Secty to call & then Mme Bernar and soon after Mme Bauer. They sat talking some time & we only went out late—& came home so late that we had a great scramble to get dressed in time to go & dine with the Serranos. We were only 12 at dinner– I don’t know the name of the man whom del Cerro presented to me & who took me in to dinner. After dinner a good many people came & there was dancing but we left early.
