5 May 1871 — Cordova
Friday. 5th [May 1871]. After breakfast we went for a walk with Mr Rutledge. We went to the celebrated Pastelleria & bought some cakes & then to the Street called “Armas” where are the silversmiths where Henry bought me a nice old gold & emerald old Cordova cross– We went back to the hotel & had lunch & at 2 started for Granada– At abt 6 we arrived at Bobadilla where we changed trains & had dinner. At 9 we arrived at Archidona but to our disgust found that there were no places for us in the Diligence going to Loja so we must wait till the same time to morrow. There was some mistake as the man of the Hotel at Cordova had promised to take our places & had not done so. There was no house at Archidona & nothing to eat & the town a league off with no means of getting there but on mules but as it was raining we could not go on them. So there was nothing for it but to make up our minds to pass the night in a 1st class carriage wh we did. The next morning at 8 we went back to Bobadilla & got breakfast there.
