11 May 1871 — Granada | |
Thursday. 11th [May 1871]. After breakfast we went off to spend the morning at the Alhambra. Contreras joined us there & so did Isabel & Ricardo Madrazo. We came away abt 2 in the pouring rain & got rather wet so that I had to change– Later it cleared up & so I put on my old clothes again & Hy & I & Isabel walked up to the Generalife. It is a charming place with some very interesting Moorish remains & a lovely garden from which the views are beautiful. It belongs to an Italian family descendants of the Gran Capitan—but the owner has never seen this lovely place. There was a charming boy of abt 10 years old who showed us over, saying his father & mother were both ill in bed. We talked to him & were delighted with his old fashioned ways– When I asked him his name he said “Francisco Hernandez (y something) para servir a [illegible word]” & raised his hat. We dined abt ¼ to 7 & there was great excitement as Mme Fortuny was confined & abt 8½ o’cl a son was born—so there was no music tonight for fear of disturbing her. | |
