10 May 1871 — Granada
Wednesday. 10th [May 1871]. Breakfast in the garden. Henry went to the town with Fortuny & I stayed at home & wrote & worked. After luncheon Henry & I & Isabel & the Hoffmans (wife & son of the American secy at Paris) walked by Fortuny’s studio. Saw some sketches—one of a girl dancing in the Alcazar of Seville—some studies of the Alhambra & 2 or 3 other things. Also some studies in aquarelle by Ricardo Madrazo wh are very good & fine in colour– The Hoffmans left us & we went to the adarves or bastions of the Alhambra where there are some pretty gardens & Contreras with us. The door was low & in going in I gave myself a blow on the head wh hurt rather but it soon got all right. Fortuny showed us a study of flowers he is painting there. We returned & dressed & at ¼ to 4 the Torres’ carriage fetched us & we went to the town & picked them up & they took us to see their little Huerta just out the town. We got out & sat there & eat dulces & drank water & got a heap of roses– Then they drove us by the Alameda on the road called Buena Vista & where there are some lovely views & then brought us back to the hotel. We dined at 7¼ & had some music after.
